Since the church has been spectacularly wrong on a number of occasions, shouldn't it leave evolution?

The Catholic Church accepts evolution as scientific fact. =) Yes, in the past, some within the church would do whatever they could to stop scientists from revealing facts. The thing is, a lot of those scientists were part of the church as well.
