How soon does the valerian root take effects?

I read that the long term use of Valerian could cause some problems. But then, how soon does it take effects? Is it within hours like right away (like that night)? Or does it take days before the real occasion you need it for ? I'm looking for the calming effect, not necessarily for sleep.
