BB is a type of battleship that is heavily armored and heavily armed?

and DD stands for destroyer, and CA and CL is light cruisers(battleship with small weapons),and SS is a submarine.ok what i want to know is what do they letters stand for. like does BB mean Big Battleship?or something else?
